How Much Coffee Does a Coffee Roaster Drink Each Day?

Roasters are constantly around coffee, and they love coffee. You might think, therefore, that they’re always drinking a brewed cup. To see if roasters actually do drink a lot more coffee than most people, we sat down with Suyog, our roaster at Driftaway Coffee.

Most Roasters Drink 2 to 2.5 Cups of Coffee a Day

Roasters often start their days out with a cup of coffee, and a second cup usually follows. The second cup may come during the late morning or early afternoon, depending on the roaster and their schedule. Usually, 2 cups a day is enough coffee for most roasters, but, like anyone else, they might sneak in another small cup on especially groggy days.

This brings the typical roaster’s daily coffee intake to 2 to 2.5 cups per day.

Roasters’ Coffee Intake on Cupping Days

Roasters must regularly cup their coffees and any samples they receive, so they can choose coffees to purchase, select roast profiles to use, and describe the roasted coffees they sell. Cuppings involve drinking small amounts of coffee many times, and a roaster might end up drinking several cups of coffee during the cuppings. They can easily end up having more than their normal 2 to 2.5 cups on cupping days.

For this reason, cuppings are usually held in the morning. At Driftaway Coffee, they’re scheduled for every Monday at 10 a.m.

The Average Person’s Coffee Intake

According to surveys from Zagat and the National Coffee Association, the average person drinks between 2.1 and 3 cups of coffee a day. Zagat’s survey found that people typically had 2.1 cups of coffee a day, while the National Coffee Association’s data suggested an average of 3 cups per day.

On cupping days, roasters will typically drink more coffee than the average person. Every other day of the week, though, their coffee drinking habits are in line with what’s typical throughout the United States. They actually don’t drink an exorbitant amount of coffee, even though they’re around it all the time. At Driftaway Coffee, we are coffee enthusiasts. Beyond enjoying an excellent cup of coffee, though, we’re just normal people drinking 2 to 3 cups per day.
