Our Top 4 Most Searched-For Questions About Coffee

At Driftaway Coffee, we’ve been posting on CoffeeCademy since late 2014. Over the past few years, we’ve covered a wide range of topics. Here are the four most searched-for questions about coffee that we’ve answered on CoffeeCademy.

How To Make Coffee Without a Coffee Maker?

We’ve covered many different brewing techniques. Ironically, our most searched-for brewing guide is on how to make coffee without a coffee maker. Whether camping, on a boat or simply at home with no coffee maker, people still need a way to brew their coffee (and we completely understand!).

In How to Brew Great Coffee Without a Coffee Maker, we provide instructions for two different brewing techniques that don’t require coffee makers. You can create a makeshift pour-over with a mug and filter (which could be a traditional paper filter, or a cloth and a sieve). Alternatively, you can mimic a French press’ immersive brewing technique with just a cup and water kettle.

What is Cold-Brew Coffee?

Cold-brew has taken the coffee world by storm, and for good reason. It’s bold, rich and smooth, and it tastes great with milk and/or sugar. As it’s become more popular, we’ve seen a lot more people searching for information on what cold-brew coffee actually is and how to make it.

4 Things You Need to Know About Cold Brew Coffee is our beginner’s guide to cold-brew. It covers:

  • how long cold-brew takes to make (3 to 24 hours):
  • why cold-brew has higher caffeine levels
  • why cold-brew is perfect for adding milk
  • what beans you should use when making cold-brew coffee
(spoiler: older beans are perfect for cold-brew.)

We’ve also published a few guides on how to actually make cold-brew coffee, including a traditional cold-brew recipe and a New Orleans-style cold-brew recipe. Our most popular post on cold-brew coffee has long been and remains, however, the one where we cover four fundamentals of cold-brew.

How Much Caffeine is in Coffee?

Lots of people drink coffee for the caffeine it contains. Thus, it makes sense that people would want to know how much caffeine coffee actually has. We have people ask us all different kinds of questions about caffeine and coffee.

In Do Darker Roasts Have More Caffeine?, we bust a lot of myths about caffeine. We explain that:

  • darker roasts have about the same amount of caffeine as lighter ones
  • robusta coffees have a lot more caffeine than arabica coffees
  • espresso actually has the lowest caffeine levels on a per-serving basis

What’s the Difference Between Light, Medium and Dark Roasts?

Roast level has a significant role in how a coffee ultimately tastes, and it’s one of the first factors that coffee drinkers learn about. Before people begin to explore specific origin countries or varietals, they usually are first exposed to roast levels. Thus, we see a lot of questions about various roast levels and the differences between them.

In Roast Levels–What’s the Difference Between Light Roast, Medium Roast and Dark Roast, we explain how roast levels impact coffees. We examine the difference in appearance and flavor, and how various roast levels are used.

Learn About Coffee for Yourself

On CoffeeCademy, we discuss many different aspects of coffee. There’s only so much you can learn about coffee by reading, though. To dig deep into this wonderful beverage, you have to try different coffees — and a lot of them. Why not get started with our tasting kit?
